A FEW WORDS OF ADVISE
Leave no trace. Clean campsites are the mark of an experienced
canoe-tripper. All burnable garbage should be disposed of in your
fire...scorch cans in the fire, flatten them and pack them out. To
keep bears and other animals away from your campsite, keep a clean and
odorless campsite. To keep your food pack out of reach, attach a rope
to the pack, sling the rope over a tree branch well away from the site, and
haul the pack above your head, securing it there until you need it again.
Latrines should be dug well back in the bush and away from the shoreline.
Do not dig trenches around your tent as this increases erosion potential on
this terrain. Do not cut living vegetation. Kindling and
firewood can be found on the forest floor. If the campsite does not
have a fireplace, build your fire on solid rock mineral soil. Before
leaving your campsite, stir water into the fire until the ashes are cold tot
he touch.
CANOEING SAFETY
Take a complete First Aid Kit in each canoe. Learn to handle your
canoe with competence and confidence before attempting a trip. Learn
to use a compass and follow a map. Wear a life jacket at all times
when in your canoe.
